That's why I said, over time. You're right, though. There are enemies to fight and in the overworld, too. I just hope it'll get better for me. The help of the other team members is big, too.

As your characters obtain more Artes and Skills, the amount of flexibility you have is greatly increased. Admittedly, it's when you get more options that Tales of Vesperia becomes significantly more fun.

The game looks and plays great. What troubles me a little, is the battle system, but like you guys said, there are more skills and Artes later in the game and more things are waiting for me in the process, that can make the battle system more fun and manageable.

A few general Tales things to keep in mind:

    • Optional but it's recommended to keep well stocked on Magic Lenses and use one on every enemy in the game. Do it as you go as there are some locations you can't return to.
    • Go to the Strategy options and make sure you set up the characters to behave how you wish, including whether you want them using items in battle, how much TP to use, how much to keep their distance, what to focus on in battle, etc. You'll need to press Y to access the advanced edit sections per character. You will need to set each character up as they join.
    • You are supposed to cook regularly in addition to relying on curative items, particularly as your quota is initially quite stringent. Cook each learned recipe until it shows as "Mastered".
    • NEVER sell weapons! Do get as many different weapons as possible in shops by buying AND synthesis, prioritising the ones with skills you particularly want to unlock. Weapons are also needed to synthesise other weapons.
    • On a related note synthesis gives you way better items than anything you can buy so don't neglect it!
    • Farming money gets easier once you access a casino from which you can win/sell high profit items.
    • You need to actually activate learned skills. Select a skill in the Skills menu to make it green.
    • Use each arte a high number of times (100+). For AI toggle party artes on/off situationally. For instance if you're fighting a boss weak to fire that absorbs water, disable water artes and have them focus on fire artes for instance.
    • Not very obvious, particularly in the Switch version but most bosses have a unique secret objective. On PS4/Xbox One these earn you trophies/achievements but I suppose on Switch they're just a bit of fun to go for?
    • If you find someone hitting for miniscule damage like 1HP it's because of the minimum damage skill. Disable it/unequip the weapon with that effect.
    • There are different kinds of artes that eventually you can chain together. For instance Base Arte > Arcane Arte > Burst Arte > Mystic Arte. The Overdrive function will allow unlimited chaining for its duration.
    • Be aware that some menus such as Items have multiple tabs which can be toggled with the shoulder buttons. Also bear this in mind in shop menus.
    • Use the Library menu for reference to things like where you're supposed to go next (Synopsis) and past tutorials (Battle Book).

Thanks for the tips, King! They're very helpful! I knew about the Library and the Battle Book, but the rest are indeed very useful! Truth is, even if I master that type of battle system, I don't like it very much, at least for the time being. We'll see how it goes.

This being my third time through the game (got it on the Switch), I decided to challenge myself by starting on Hard Mode. So far, it does not disappoint; had to stock up on Life Bottles for Gattuso and just barely made it through that boss on my third try. Right now I’m making a little cash on the monsters around Capua Nor after blowing it all on restocking my items.

Don’t worry PaoMario, the battle system does get better; before long you’ll get to perform longer combos much more seamlessly as the game unlocks more features and abilities to help you do so.

As for doing the secret missions, doesn’t it make bosses drop an extra item upon their defeat? I’m not 100% sure on that though...at the very least, it’s an extra 10 Grade, anyway.

Clearing the Secret Missions do get you some extra rewards. Some even reward weapons. Clearing the last Secret Mission, for example, will actually earn you Last Fencer, which was Yuri's ultimate weapon in the 360 release (not sure about the PS3 release).

It's still his best weapon. Its entry number is slightly different now, it's 119 instead of 117.

So long as it still teaches Glory. That's one of the main reasons Yuri is considered one of the most overpowered main characters in the series.

Yep, Super Chain 3 and Glory. But like I said before I personally believe Patty is even more broken than Yuri. She can solo the hardest superboss in the game on Unknown difficulty taking 0 damage, and can pretty much spam to do it, with no need of Glory.
